Death of Joseph Devore

For Forty Years a Resident of Newton

Joseph W. Devore, for over forty years a resident of Newton, died at his home on Diller Avenue, last Sunday, at the age of 62 years. The deceased was born near Pinkneyville, and was the son of George and Phoebe Courtright Devore. Early in life he connected himself with the Sussex Railroad Company, and was rapidly advanced from train service to engineer, a duty that he performed faithfully to himself and the company. For a number of years he lived a quiet, retired life at his pleasant home on Diller Avenue, although at times engaged in assisting the town committee in work that required a practical hand, just such a one as the deceased was qualified to fill. The deceased is survived by his widow, Mary C. Devore, one sister, Mrs. Jane Cooper, of Newton, one daughter Mrs. Joseph Stouder, of Newton, and one son, John H. Devore, bookkeeper in the store of the William W. Woodward Hardware Company, at home. The funeral was held on Wednesday afternoon at his late home, Rev. Milton E. Grant, of the First Methodist Episcopal Church officiating.
