Sunday
evening two Newton boys, about sixteen years of age, stole a ride
on the milk train from Newton to Cranberry Lake. While the train
was standing at the Newton station they seated themselves on the
narrow platform of the head milk car, with their feet braced on
the cross beam of the tender. When they arrived at the Lake they
were begrimed with soft coal dust and dirt, and it was hard to tell
whether they belonged to the native born or had recently been exported
from Africa.
One
of the boys wore a nobby bright red slouch hat. When he arrived
at the lake it was hard to tell what the original color of the hat
had been. Going down the steep grade from Slate cut to Andover they
were compelled to hold on for dear life on account of the jolting
of the cars and the swaying of the tender. They succeeded in working
their way back on the pretext that they had lost their tickets at
the Lake.
