The Y at Andover Junction
The engineer corps of the Lehigh & Hudson River
railroad on Friday last completed the survey for the Y that is to form
a junction with that road and the Lackawanna system at Andover Junction.
The spur or Y will connect with the Lackawanna road between the stations
at the borough and the Junction, and with the Lehigh & Hudson River
road near Slater's Lake. The object of the Y is to carry out an arrangement
between the two roads consummated about three weeks ago for the transfer
of the Lackawanna eastern freight to the L. & H. R. road at this
point and taken to Maybrook and delivered to the N. Y., N. H. road for
Boston and other points in the east. The arrangement goes into effect
September 1st next. At present this freight is delivered at Hoboken,
taken across the river on floats and transferred to the new Haven road
at Harlem. The Lackawanna Company expect to take from 200 to 300 cars
over the L & H. R. road daily, a large bulk of which will consist
of perishable freight. The Lackawanna will run their own trains through
to Maybrook, and it is rumored that the track from Waterloo to the foot
of the mountain below the stone quarry will be repaired and used for
western freight trains, thus avoid the roundabout way to Netcong, cutting
off several miles of travel. The contractor advertises in another column
for teams at Andover Junction.
