New Jersey Herald - January 23, 1879 issue

The telegraph office was removed from the Post Office to the depot on Thursday last.

The water in the reservoir at the depot is so low that the railroad company is compelled to secure water at the "Big Spring" for the locomotives.

A new bridge is being built by the Sussex Railroad company across the highway at Waterloo. The company is also rebuilding the bridges between Warbasse's Junction and Branchville.

The telephone connection between Warbasse's Junction and the Newton depot is working satisfactorily. An ordinary conversation in either direction can be distinctly heard at the other end of the line.

On Thursday last a car loaded with lump coal, attached to Conductor Knox's train, unloaded itself along the track between this place and Franklin, and the brakes of five cars on the rear of the train were torn away. Fortunately all the cars kept the track, and no other damage was done. On Saturday the same train was delayed at Franklin over an hour by the drawheads of the tender of the locomotive and a car on a side track becoming fastened together in such a manner that it was necessary to brace up the car to disconnect them.

The Sussex Railroad company is now doing the largest amount of business ever done by the company in transporting ore over its line both ways, and this branch of its business will be greatly increased when the Franklin furnace is put in blast, and work is resumed at the old Pochuck mines, near McAfee's Valley. The company have all their locomotives and cars in use, and it is reported that another new locomotive has been ordered of a Paterson firm.
